There was a time where everyone went out to get diesel engine vehicles, because gas was higher priced than diesel fuel. But the rates for all forms of fuel are rising so many people are worried. Nowadays, diesel power prices are a lot higher than regular gasoline. Quite a few environmentalists, experts, and technologists are in search of new alternatives to traditional fossil fuels.
The original diesel engine was created to run on peanut oil or vegetable oil but because petroleum was much cheaper, people opted for diesel fuel. Because of this, people have forgotten that diesel cars can easily be powered by natural cooking oils. Biodiesel is now being manufactured by utilizing animal fats, soybean oil, vegetable oil and old restaurant grease. There is a mixture called B20 which is 80% petroleum diesel and 20% biodiesel. Ethanol is yet another supplemental fuel that is biodegradable and sustainable. It does not add to the greenhouse gas emissions, due to the fact it is a clean fuel. It is composed of 15% gasoline and 85% alcohol, which is the way it got the name E85, and it can be used on any diesel engine vehicle. As compared to various other alternative fuels, the price of E85 is usually higher.
Another alternative is vehicles that operate on electricity but they have a couple of problems. They do not go very fast and also battery pack life is very short. Having said that, there is a sports car, named the Tesla that is very fast and can go far on 100% pure electricity. Inspite of the great improvement in electric cars, they have not sold well because of the high prices. Though a purely electric car may not sell very well, the hybrid option has a better outlook. These types of cars run on both gasoline and electricity. Although these cars cost more than regular fuel cars, they provide more savings in the long term.
Each of the alternative fuels for automobiles seem to have their unique problems. Nevertheless, enhancements and new breakthroughs are being made everyday. At some point down the road you will see alternative fuels running any vehicle.
