Here in the US, we are being deliberately lied to regarding what the rest of the world is doing on behalf of environmental issues. The consumption of renewable energy sources is catching on globally, but we continue to be focused on non-renewable and costly fossil fuels. It is tough to even fathom what is necessary, energy-wise, to power the entire world, and merely trying to picture it, is hard as a result of its sheer volume.
Many of our political leaders don't understand green concerns, or pretend not to, and never talk about them. A decade ago, who would have even envisioned a governor of California, driving a hummer that was a hybrid? Not only did Schwarzenegger drive a hybrid vehicle, but he passed a three billion dollar solar energy program, making him one of the most eco-friendly political leaders out there. The federal government, nonetheless, has been falling back far behind, particularly the Bush administration, what with their involvement with the major oil companies. The green movement was dismissed in favor of assisting the oil companies increase their already huge net profit.
This seems to give most people the idea that things are the same in the rest of the world, but nothing could be further from the truth. It's just that America chooses not to participate. In Australia, for instance, they've determined that by the year 2016 they will be making use of renewable sources of energy for at least 60% of their energy requirements. Just think about that being undertaken in America, and what it could do. In Germany, they lead the world in the utilization of both solar energy and wind energy.
By 2020, a minimum of 20% of their entire energy usage will come from renewable sources of energy. In Norway, they already use NO fossil oil to fill their energy needs; rather they use 99% renewable energy sources. It doesn't have any petroleum imports, and exports almost all of its resources in oil, making it the world's third biggest exporter.
Brazil could have fascinating political situations, but it has become South America's clean energy great. Their aim is to run their whole country's transportation requirements entirely on ethanol soon enough. As ethanol can be made using sugar cane, it costs more or less half as much as regular gasoline. If the United States did the same thing, the savings on petroleum would be almost 2 trillion dollars. Those are just some examples of the strides being made in the rest of the world to clean up our planet.
The United States not only is the biggest user of petroleum, but also gives out the most greenhouse gases. Without us, the rest of the world can do their best, but they won't succeed in completing the process. As long as we keep our eyes closed and go our own awful way, the world will keep on being unclean.
