We've all been there, you're listening to your ipod on a long bus trip and it runs out of power in the middle of your favorite song. No listening to podcasts, no music or audio books, what are you going to do with all the time ahead of you. If not that then surely your cell phone has given up the ghost half way through an important conversation. The phone sounds a beep and you see the low charge warning on the screen. Looks like you'll have to find an un-vandalized phone booth - good luck!

I'm guilty as charged. These days I want my entertainment or business ready at the touch of a button. That's probably why I have more gadgets and hand held devices than I care to think about. However they all need power and quite often I forget to charge them fully leaving me stranded. The solution to this problem is to use a portable solar power generator.

Given the increasing awareness of renewable resources, many portable solar generators are been developed. Basically they consist of the same things. There are numerous solar cells that create electricity when exposed to direct sunlight. This is used to charge a battery in the generator. The generator will have one or more power points where a hand held device can be plugged in and utilize the battery's charge.

The plus point for the solar generator is that if the battery is ever low the generator will use sunlight to recharge it. As long as the sun is shining the battery will be topping up or be full. Thus any mobile or portable appliances that you have will have a power supply. You will never have that flat battery experience again.

When going for a portable solar generator there are a few things to consider. First should be the type, size or efficiency of the solar panels. Bigger panels will obviously have more surface area and thus provide more direct current. This has to be weighed against bulkiness and aesthetic appeal. You want your generator to be compatible in terms of size with the devices it will be powering. And it should be comfortable to carry in a backpack or something like that, without being heavy.

Another factor is the length of time the battery will power a device. A good test of this would be to determine how long a portable dvd player would last using the battery. Obviously the longer time this is the better but again size will be a factor if you want it to be truly portable.

Something else to consider is the type of hand held devices you can plug into the generator and whether you need any adapters. At the very least it should be compatible with a cell/mobile phone, a gps device, a blackberry and a pda. You would also want it to be compatible with the popular entertainment appliances like PSP's , ipods and a dvd player.
