Renewable Energy Generation: Financial Benefits

The financial situation for taking renewable energy generation has now improved in the UK. The reason that's important of course is due to the environmental considerations to do with fossil fuels, in particular the effects of global warming. So these will be considered first, and then the financial situation regarding solar energy will be explored.

Environmental Concerns

Before getting on to what the financial benefits of renewable energy generation now are, we will briefly go over why using renewable energy is so important. Basically, of course, it is because the alternative, what we are using now, is so problematic. What we are using now of course is fossil fuels.

It should be noted that fossil fuels are not really some unspeakable evil. If we went back in time and prevented ourselves from using them, we never would have had the industrial revolution and most of us would still be peasants. Actually, most of us would not be alive, it is only because we have so much cheap energy that such a large world population can be sustained. However problems have now become evident.

When fossil fuels are burned they release carbon dioxide. That is not an evil gas, just like fossil fuels are not an evil fuel. It's just if there's too much of it in the atmosphere then it causes unnatural global warming. This could cause very big problems all over the world.

In the UK, instead of getting warmer, we might actually see our climate deteriorate. That's because the only reason that we have a warmer climate than, say, Russia, is because we have the benefit of the North Atlantic Drift. If that gets changed due to global warming, as some say it might, then we can expect much colder conditions.

When it comes to the wider effects all over the planet, one of the big ones is that the polar ice caps could melt. If this happens, leading to the sea levels rising, then of course coastal communities are going to come under threat. However if ecosystems are disrupted that would be even worse, because it would mean that feeding ourselves may no longer be possible.

Financial Advances

So far then we have shown why it is so important that renewable energy generation picks up and takes over from fossil fuels. Considering just how dire the consequences could be, it's not unreasonable to ask why we have not done so already.

Unfortunately we can't really do that because the technology is not sufficiently advanced to allow that. The way that we can tell that is it is not financially viable (without government intervention) to use renewable energy instead of the cheaper fossil fuels. When that is no longer the case, the switch will happen very rapidly as it will be more expensive to use things like coal or oil instead.

The good news as regards the financial situation is that this change is starting to happen. Conventional energy is becoming more and more expensive, which is not good in the short term for people of course, but it does mean that things like solar energy are becoming more attractive. Also, the cost of solar installations is quite rapidly decreasing.

Also, the government is getting actively involved in making renewable energy in to a better investment by introducing the feed in tariff. Through this scheme you get paid for the renewable energy that you produce, at the same time as making savings on your energy bills of course.

There is of course a lot more to learn about renewable energy, and in particular how solar energy can be advantageous. It is recommended that you check out some solar companies to see if it would be a good idea for you.
