Although most people focus on the environmental benefits of renewable energy generation, what goes hand in hand with this is its money-making capabilities. Although profit is a bit of a dirty word these days, what that merely illustrates is that something is being done efficiently to a good purpose that people want. It's therefore very encouraging that renewable energies such as solar energy are becoming more profitable.

Problems with Fossil Fuels

There are two major problems with fossil fuels. For one they are polluting, the worst thing that they emit is carbon dioxide. This is not strictly speaking a pollutant but it does drive global warming. The other major problem with fossil fuels is that they are going to run out.

The most immediate problem with fossil fuels then, is that they they are burned (which we need to do to get their energy) they release carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere. That's what causes man-made global warming, and that threatens us with some pretty disastrous consequences.

The most serious consequence that we face is that ecosystems could be so disrupted by the higher temperatures that it could lead to our not being able to grow all the food that we need. Meaning that large sections of the world population could starve. In that context, the one that everyone knows about, sea level rises from melting ice caps, is relatively insignificant.

So why, given the fact that global warming is potentially so bad, should we be worried about not being able to use fossil fuels anymore, since they are causing the problems? Because for our economies to function, we need energy. And we need economies to feed ourselves too, so it's important that we are able to switch over to another energy source before fossil fuels run out.

Solar Energy

The only conceivable way of averting the disasters of both global warming and economic collapse is by starting to use a form of energy which is not only clean, but which is also not going to run out. Luckily for us, these energy sources are available, from renewable energy generation sources.

One of the best renewable energies is solar energy. The reason it is so good is that it is versatile, it doesn't require a lot of space to work. This means that people can get solar panels on their roof. It's even possible to power transport in this way.

There are other forms of renewable energy of course, from wind energy to geothermal energy. And other good ways of using them, other than electricity production, is for heat. For example you have heat pumps that are either ground source or air source. These can also be installed for people's houses.

For the majority of other renewable energy sources, the big problem is that, not only are they inefficient but they take up a lot of space. This means it relies on companies or governments to build them, rather than individual people.

Saving Money

When you get a renewable energy source to provide you with power on your property, you're immediately going to start making savings on energy bills. However, whether the savings are worth it or not depends on how much they are in comparison with the installation costs.

When you take the installation costs in to account as well, then on their own solar panels are not very good value for money. However, the UK government has now introduced the feed in tariff, which pays you for your renewable energy production. This makes it a much better investment.

In order for renewable energy generation to be able to completely take over from the fossil fuels that we use then it is going to have to be naturally cheaper. That is, it has to be a good investment without government intervention. So when governments start taxing it rather than subsidising it, that is when it is going to have made the breakthrough.
