Putting your house, business or farm on a wind power system can save money and the environment. Save money on your annual power bills by combining alternative wind energy. Just having your wind turbine functioning and meeting your family's energy needs creates awareness in others of the alternative energy sources.
A turbine powered wind system will work on a grid that sends electricity back to a central control panel to be converted to energy. Running your wind power system within the public grid power system has added benefits. When your wind power is intermittent you can pull power from the public grid. Rural and developing areas will benefit greatly from an off the grid wind power system. These systems will usually include back of power in either the form of solar panels or diesel generators.
If you choose to operate a wind power system off the grid you will generally pay a bit more to start off and obviously not have access to the public power. In rural or developing areas this is often the only option. There will be a few additional pieces of hardware that will need to be included for an off the grid system. But once wind power systems are in place, the cost recovery is rapid.
Hardware needed for most wind power systems will include your wind turbine, a bank of deep cycle batteries and inverter. The inverter will move this energy to household electricity to power household appliances, lights, etc.
For those living in more rural and suburban areas an on the grid wind power system will be preferred. Rebates and tax benefits are often a perk for on grid systems. The turbines can be combined with the architecture and excess power can be sold back to the city power grid.
Contact your local government offices to see what kind of informational programs they are promoting about wind power systems. Your local power company will be able to provide information on alternative energy systems as well. Hunt down the references that your local government is using and start asking your own questions.
Think about the areas around you that already incorporate wind turbines for energy production. Talk to people who use domestic small wind power systems. Another easy place to start is with an alternative energy contractor. Many contractors will offer free consultations, especially in a down economy.
