There are all kinds of things you can do in your home to avoid using too much energy. Put plants around your home to help clean your immediate environment. You can really lower the amount of pollutants in your household by 50% just by having plants around the household. A couple of plants that absorb toxic gases such as benzene and formaldehyde are English ivy and peace lilies. If you have little children or pets, get plants that are not toxic.

You can avoid wasting water by doing little things like using less water when you bathe. As an example, you can bathe instead of a shower because we all know it takes less water to fill up a bathtub than to shower yourself off, even if you shower for one minute. If you need to take a shower, see to it that you shower for no more than ten minutes. You can save up to 50% if you get a low-flow shower head and faucet. You may wish to put in low-flow toilets also. You can avoid wasting a substantial amount of water by using a low-flush toilet and it creates less greenhouse gases during the purification process. If you can't afford to get a new toilet, you can use a plastic water bottle with the cap on which can throttle the water used with every flush.

You can save money by getting your appliances or electronics repaired rather than replacing them, unless you can get the newer energy-saving models. If you restore them, not only will you save money, but they won't wind up in the landfills. One other way to save energy is to avoid using an appliance at all, by hanging your clothes out to dry. On average, people do 400 loads of laundry annually so you can imagine the amount of energy necessary to dry clothes. If you choose to dry your laundry on a rack, you can save a considerable amount of electricity every year. Clothes-lines nowadays come in a variety of styles that are easily movable, and when you don't need to use them can be put away. They may be put in open air on a deck or patio depending on the weather.

If you currently take medicinal drugs, you may have a couple that you didn't finish. These are likely in your medicine cabinet with expired dates for taking them. Never flush the pills down the toilet because they can get into the water supply and harm someone. What you must do instead is take the expired drugs to a pharmacy and they will be able to get rid of it for you.

If you use a hearth, do not waste the heat, instead burn more efficiently with a direct-vent gas fireplace. Nearly 85% of the gas used in an open fireplace is wasted. A wood-burning hearth sucks the heat from the home and shoots it up the chimney. If this happens, make sure that you have the right settings so that the heat will not escape your home.
