Wind power is the quickly becoming the largest renewable energy platform in the world. You might see these wind turbine generators popping up especially in rural areas. The wind turbine electricity is generated obviously by the wind. Wind is a type of solar power. This is how it works, as the sun heats surfaces at differing rates, hot air rises up and cooler air will rush in to fill the gap. Thus the rushing that is produced is the wind. If a wind turbine is positioned in the right area it will catch the wind.
When you see a modern turbine you will notice that there are only three blades. This is because the metal cannot handle more weight than that as it is too much stress and could break the metal. The blades are typically made of a lightweight sturdy plastic or fiberglass, have a concave surface, and are off center as his gives a better angle for harnessing the wind and it also helps the blades to turn more efficiently.
The blades connect to a double rotor assembly. The blade rotor connects to the blades and spins as they catch wind. The blade rotor connects to a magnet rotor through a pulley assembly which is on larger turbines or at times directly on the smaller turbines often used for homes.
The magnet rotor does not turn anything it turns around a magnetic alternator which then forms a magnetic field. This magnetic field then goes over the wires of the alternator and an electrical charge is created. The electrical charge that is generated is then carried into a regulator which converts the generated electricity into DC power. A wind turbine actually works just the opposite of the way a fan does; instead of using electricity to create wind, a wind turbine uses wind to create electricity.
Now that you have an explanation of how the wind turbine works, you can understand why it is such a good source of power. Wind has been used for producing energy for many years. It has always been around and it has helped people to do things like saw wood, grind grain, and spin a water wheel.
These days it may sound more sophisticated, but the premise is basically the same. There is a bit more math involved and more sophisticated components used to make it capture the wind to make electricity. The turbines do not resemble the old windmills of the past, but they do work more efficiently
