More power is squandered everyday in the United States than in any other nation in the world. With environmental matters like pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer, we must be very aware of how much electricity we are consuming.

We are going to focus on a few things that we all can do to conserve electricity and save money at the same time. These are extremely simple things that anyone can do, we simply need to make the decision to do them in order to help our environment and ourselves.

The first thing you can do is to just turn off the lights whenever you go out of the room. Many of us likely temporarily leave the living room lights on when we go to the kitchen to get food because we believe we are coming right back. If you do this for merely a few times a day, it could add up to at the least thirty minutes of wasted electricity. While you wasting what could be thirty minutes of power every day may not appear like much, consider that millions of other people are doing it as well. And each soul who does this is squandering 182 hours of electrical energy a year for just this one light. Let's suppose that we actually leave the lights on for about 182 hours every single year and let's multiply that by one million people. The amount adds up to a staggering 182 million hours of wasted electrical energy that is in essence coming from one single room in each person's home.

In addition to leaving the lights on when leaving a room, a lot of us turn the lights on when entering a room. Many of us do this automatically. I tend to catch myself doing the very same thing too. The problem is that even during the day when you don't need the light because you're getting more than enough sunlight to light up the room. You are going to nevertheless come in and switch the light on. And in addition to that, because of the natural light filtering in, we forget we turned the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You should make a deliberate effort to leave the lights switched off if there is enough natural light in a room.

One more issue is people leaving electric devices like TVs and radios on all day, even when they are not using them. When I visit my mom, I have to remind her to flip the television off as she would leave it running even though she's not watching. This is a great waste of electricity. Hence, if you're not in the room, turn off the television.

These are just a few easy things that can be done each day to help save power and to help save the environment by doing so. It only takes a little effort on your part to remember these things, and when everyone makes a small effort, it can add up to make a massive difference.
