If you're one of the few people that have never experienced the luscious flavor of sweet potatoes, then you have been missing a wonderful treat. It has long been a holiday tradition in many homes to serve sweet potatoes or yams on the table for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. There is nothing quite as good as baked sweet potatoes or yams that have been lightly buttered and sweetened with melted marshmallows on top. They can also be baked with the skins left on and eaten much the same way you would a baked potato with butter and even bacon bits. One of the most favorite ways to serve them is when they are made up into sweet potato pies as a dessert. Holiday dinners just wouldn't be the same without these orange potatoes.

Most people might not even realize how very good for you sweet potatoes are. We are so accustomed to eating white or red potatoes regularly, we have gotten stuck in a potato rut. Sweet potatoes do go well with ham or turkey during the holidays, but they can also be a perfect side dish for things like baked or broiled chicken, pork or beef roasts, and even fish. Your kids might want to try sweet potatoes at other times of the year just because they have that cool looking orange color. Since sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamin A and C, and also have protein and fiber, you can't go wrong if you get your kids to eat them. You will also be glad to know that they have no fats unless of course you load them up with butters and sugars.

Sweet potatoes are a root vegetable just like other potatoes so this ultimately means they store very well. When kept in a cool and dry place, sweet potatoes can stay firm and high in vitamin content for up to a year. They are perfect to store in a root cellar if you have one and if not you can keep them refrigerated. If you like the idea of being able to stock up on certain nutritional fresh foods, then you really need to include sweet potatoes because they will keep for so long. As long as you can protect them from cuts and bruising, they will be ready to cook and eat for some time to come.

No one is making fun of the idea of maintaining a food stockpile anymore. If you were to lose your job, having a food stockpile means you won't have to worry about groceries for some time. If prices for food continue to rise, buy it while it's cheaper or on sale and put it away for later. You have probably already realized that just because a natural disaster doesn't happen right where you live, it can still have an impact on the food supply and demand far away in both pricing and availability. If you ever want to be prepared when It comes to an emergency of any kind, food and water should be at the top of the list.

Whether you are just trying to come up with some new side dishes to add to your weeknight meals or if you are looking for nutritional foods to add to your stockpile, always include sweet potatoes. You can buy them at the grocery store or farmer's market or even better, grow some of your own! They are delicious and versatile enough to serve them up in lots of different ways and you they are so good for there is simply no reason to not keep them on hand all of the time.
