Hot water washing uses three times the energy that cold water uses.

In the US, there are detergents that are created for cold water use, whereas a few of the European makes call for hot water. It is best to get the cold water going, then to pour in your detergent, and only once the machine is filling up with water to add the clothes that need to be washed. A few of the soaps can be replaced with some baking soda, without adversely affective the quality of your wash. The agitation of the water, instead of the laundry detergent, does a great deal of the laundering. With all of the different types of laundry detergents, you should check around to find the natural ones that are safe for the planet.

Before you spend your money, be sure that you are getting what you are looking for, rather than being taken in by marketing. If the weather permits, dry your clothes by hanging them up, instead of putting them in a dryer. The fresh air and sun will do great things for the odor and color of your garments, while much less electricity will be used, to the benefit of your pocket. Discolorations should also be less of a problem if you decide to not use a dryer, the heat from which can actually set and seal them in. Together with the laundry, there are other quick and easy ways to avoid using too much power, and make your household more green.

Switching the light bulbs is an easy and effective way. Conventional lightbulbs should be replaced with compact fluourescent ones, which utilize much less energy. Along with being better for the environment, doing this will be good for your pocket, by lowering your electric bill. If you love taking showers, start making them shorter. You won't be cleaner by being in the shower for an hour than 15 minutes. It will cost you less money since you won't use nearly as much hot water. The amount of water consumed will be cut down, as will the electricity necessary for heating it.

A sure no brainer is to switch off the lights when they aren't being used. This goes for other things that consume electricity too. When not required, keep things unplugged, such as phone chargers, or even your television. As long as they are plugged in, they will keep on using power. In the winter, each time you fix your family's meals, snap the opportunity to use your oven as a heater. Once your food is ready, switch the oven off and open the door to allow the heat to spread and warm the kitchen. It is actually very easy to go green and save electricity at home.
