Bottled water coolers are an everyday sight around the office environment. But when you approach the water cooler do you ever think about the actual plastic that is utilised to make the bottle of the water cooler? I didn't! I was tied up brooding about the conversation I would have to strike up with a 'colleague ' that felt the necessity to quench his/her thirst at the same time.
But in all seriousness, there has to be a change we need to see a long-lasting change from bottled water coolers to bottleless water coolers. Particularly as there are very many solutions that may help a company to go bottleless at the office.
The choice is a Point-Of-Use purifying system. This is the name for the less expensive, convenient and ecologically friendly alternative choice to bottled water coolers.
Let's think about the environmental impact of bottled water coolers. Typically it takes around a gallon of water to produce a gallon of bottled water. Furthermore, pumping water from the ground can have terrible consequences on the ecology and this also dries up water supplies leading to hose pine bans and other limitations in the developed world. It's simply an unnecessary waste of our natural resources.
That is not the end of the environmental impact. For only one year of manufacturing plastic bottles, the U. S. alone consumes 1.5 million barrels of oil. This will generate electricity for 250,000 homes.
The benefits of bottleless water coolers are clear. They help cut energy and greenhouse emissions while also reducing plastic in landfills and in our beautiful seas. Not to mention, you'll avoid the scary 'gulp-gulp ' sound that bottled water coolers make!
Many corporations provide bottleless solutions; all it needs is a quick Web search. But change will be slow unless we all do something to push it thru. Contact employers or talk to your own employer and explain the benefits of a bottleless solution. You will also be saving them money in the longer term so it's sure to be a winner. Once you have won the employer over, remember to dispose of the plastic scrap water cooler bottle correctly. Hopefully, most of it'll be reused to create your next CD, TV or tee!
We need to take green steps forward and what might look like a small change, can and will have an enormous impact overall. If you get a company to go bottleless, just think of the quantity of big blue bottles you have saved over a numerous number of years.
