As we learn more about wind power and its ability to generate clean renewable energy, we are also discovering that all we have to do is go to our history books to find these original ideas. Energy was needed for water in remote areas and turning crops into grain.

The vertical wind power that most companies are now talking about was initially used by Egyptians about 3,000 years ago to turn wheat into flour. Now some companies are planning to use these vertical windmills for homes on a small scale. These are particularly helpful in places which don't have a constant flow of wind or where the direction of the wind keeps changing.

The power needs of a single house hold will be sufficiently met with a three kilowatt version. Moreover, this is rather noiseless, does not need a lot of land or height. It's also environment friendly due to its unique rotation and design and does not pull in birds or bats while working.

For the art lover in you, some of these designs are just awesome. One model, in particular, can be found at various locations in the UK where popularity is gaining. Mercedes-Benz is working with manufacturers right now to set up charging points next to these vertical towers. It is hoped that power generated will provide enough power for 30,000 miles of driving per year for its new line of electric care, Smart fortwo.

Jay Leno has installed a 500-watt unit in his garage and a larger 10kw version in his 17,000 square foot garage. While the initial price and installation costs are still a tad high ($20,000), supply and demand will eventually force the price in line with residential owner's needs. Leno has many ideas that have been put into place. You can find these through the Popular Mechanics website.

Not just targeted toward residential areas, the vertical turbine is being put to use on rooftops of hotels everywhere from London to New Zealand. Recently, a new company presented its model at the US Botanical Garden in Washington, that had been independently tested in Utah, bringing rave reviews. Still relatively new, this small (many under six feet in height) offer feasible options that many thought there would never be available to them.

There is also a different kind of vertical windmill which uses the principles of sailing engineering. Solar cells cover the turbine vanes which helps in generating a combination of solar and wind power. If you want something which can help you to harness the wind or solar energy but is not heavy or bulky, this could be a great option for you. A lot of awarded and patented inventions are being marketed in the past years and new inventions are being created.

Its quite an exciting time as people are delving more into the past and understanding the ways of harnessing these renewable energy options. A lot of new inventions are taking place which can be explored in the websites based on green energy. The Germans are quite ahead of every one else when it comes to promotion of the wind energy. You don't need to compromise on anything that doesn't sound real since in the near future you will be spoilt for choices in the market.
