Solar power is an alternate energy source with incredible commercial and ecological advantages. Should you be thinking about it for your house, here are the basics.

Put as simply as possible solar power works by converting free sunlight into usable energy. This process includes using solar cells to capture the energy inherent in sunlight. The photovoltaic materials are comprised of negative and positive pieces of material, regularly silicone, that respond to the sun. As the daylight hits these cells, the energy "slices" off negative charged ions. This creates a magnetic field, a type of energy. The energy is then caught in tiny wires, which forms an electrical current. The wires are connected to an inverter. The inverter converts the energy into a usable power source.

The wonderful thing about solar power is it is a free energy source. Historically, the price of capturing and maintaining solar electricity wasn't cheap, but this has changed dramatically in the last ten years. Systems are now much better, with the final cost usually concerned in the purchase and installation. Relying on the system, there's virtually no maintenance cost and most systems have a 40 or 50 year lifespan. Not bad, eh? Solar power can be cheaper still if you don't mind doing some Do It Yourself and learning how to build solar panels from scratch.

Going solar is also more attractive now due to laws passed by numerous states. At first, owners can get a tax rebate for installing solar. On top of this, over fifty percent of the states now mandate a concept known as "net metering."

Net metering is all about saving tons of money on your resources. Fundamentally, you are now allowed to "sell" power back to the utility corporations at the exact same price they charge you. With solar electricity, this means you can simply feed your system into the application grid in the daytime and then use regular energy at night. Since your utility meter runs backwards, this effectively indicates you will significantly reduce, if not eliminate, your electricity bills. This process alone can save you thousands of dollars per year and $40,000 to $100,000 over the length of the system, depending on your typical regular debts. With such savings, you can see why solar energy is beginning to become more enticing.

When it comes to solar electricity, the question isn't whether you should use it. The important question is why it is that you aren't using it already!
