Getting together with family and friends for cooking making, wine tasting, candies stirred, shared and tasted- ahhhh this is what the holidays are all about! However as yummy as pulled taffy, eggnog, and truffles sound they do come with a cost- a cost to your waistline that is. One of the nicest gifts you can give yourself this season is to eat well and by that I mean eating healthy.

For some reason when someone goes on a diet they think all they can eat are green things. If you are lacking the burst of flavor that a variety of foods bring to your palate, then yes you are going to get bored and your diet won't last long. Let me share with you some amazing super foods that will not only taste great but have the nutrients to boost your energy, improve circulation throughout your body and improve your eyesight.

One of my favorite super foods has got to the blue berry. This tiny yet succulent berry has high levels of antioxidants, which have antibiotic effects and combat the damage done by inflammation, these little berries are also know to protect the heart from damage.

Need some color in your salad? Adding cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli rabe, or cabbage, they all contain a powerful range of enzymes that fight disease and lower the incidence of lung and colon cancers.

Many salads can be enriched in flavor by adding a little fish: King, sockeye, and Coho salmon have more omega-3 fatty acids than almost any other seafood. Wild caught sardines are low in mercury and contain as much calcium as a cup of milk, (3 oz. serving.)

And the winner is- Cinnamon. Cinnamon has the highest antioxidant levels of all herbs and spices, and when you add it to foods it can keep you feeling steady and satisfied for it has a positive effect on blood glucose levels.

Good sources of manganese and copper are found in spelt, is like whole wheat only sweeter and nuttier, it makes for a great spread and is found in some great recipes where the meal needs to stay light in calories but protein is needed.

One of the fun things about a salad is the fact that you can add a dash of this, a tablespoon full of that such as avocados, which are high in potassium, foliate and lutein, which aids eyesight. Beets add great color to a salad and this vegetable packs foliate which guards against birth defects, and osteoporosis. When cooking for the holidays don't look past your spices, much aid as a digestive aid and wound healer such as turmeric, or ginger, cayenne, and black pepper which boost metabolism.

So now that you have some new ideas of how to dress up a salad don't be afraid to experiment and have fun mixing those greens. Remember healthy doesn't have to mean boring or tasteless if you are feeling this way it might mean you just haven't found the right combination of flavors waiting to burst in your mouth!
