Now more than ever kids, adults, families need to be eating nutritious foods. With families on the go, the economy adding more demands on the budget and food prices continuing to rise we need to take care of our health.
The idea of providing snacks for your child might not be a daunting as "Hey Mom, what's for dinner?" but the creative juices might be on kilter as dinner planning. However this does not need to be the case let me give you some great snacking ideas in this article:
Snack time can be as creative or a quick "pick-me-up" before off and running to sports events. They key is to be prepared and plan ahead and in order to do this you need to know what your kids will eat. So when planning recipes, plan with the kids around, get their input.
Lunch time can often be rushed due to meetings at work, carpool, yard work, or errands- what ever your set back for a good lunch, proper planning can make grabbing a quick lunch a healthy one. At weeks beginning, (maybe Sunday night) throw together some nutritious foods, such as salad Cut up a mixture of different kinds of lettuce leafs and divide into small containers. Dice up some chicken or turkey and put these in small containers, then in some small sandwich bags put some trail mix, nuts, and or cranraisins. Now you can mix and spice up an ordinary salad by throwing a few of these items together and you are ready to go- a healthy lunch, and because you already have the salad in a small container you can take it to go if needs be.
Kids love to make things, you could put out several items and let them get creative, for example what could you create with a pear half, some raisins, mango slices and coconut? Well I have seen some pretty good Mr. Potato heads in my day. Let the kids explore with healthy foods and not only will they have fun but they will be eating healthy.
In a crunch- try stocking up more on the things your family will eat, such as whole grain breads and cheeses, these make a great side dish and can be paired with almost any meal.
Remember that prepackaged foods such as lunchables might be convenient but do you know how many preservatives are needed to keep that little stack of ham ready to eat? Not to mention you are paying double for the packaging. Take the time and create your own lunchable by precutting ham and cheese slices and keeping them in a sealed container, then when your child wants a "lunchable" you can quickly have them create their own.
Foods create memories, keeping your meals everyday simple will bring you and your family joy as you all can sit down at the table together with out one person constantly slaving over the stove. By planning ahead you can have chicken, pork, or ribs simmering in the crock pot all day and come home to the sweet smell of home cooking.
When making meals the whole family will love, get input and get family members involved in the planning and the cooking. Nothing says together time like cooking.
