A farmers' market is fundamentally a conventional system of selling agricultural and domestic products. What's extraordinaryabout farmers' market produce is that it is locally grown, and hence is very fresh and is packed with vitamins and minerals. Besides fresh vegetables and fruits, farmers' markets also supply purchasers with honey, seedlings, heritage variety of meat and fowl, heirloom products and other agricultural products. The items sold in farmers market are better as compared to those sold in supermarkets which are typically harvested long before they are fully grown to help storing and transportation. They are then subjected to chemical treatment to encourage ripening before reaching the shelves of traditional and super markets. Farmers' market products however takes a more time to mature, and is therefore more healthful, luscious and better than the commodities found in supermarkets. As a matter of fact, this produce is so fresh; it is collected the day before, or sometimes on the early morning of the market. Moreover, as there is no time spent in transit, a greater part of the nutritional content is retained.

Organic food

Some farmers' market supply organic food, which small family establishments produce. The advantage of purchasing organic food is that it is wholesome as it reduces your exposure to dangerous and possibly carcinogenic insecticides and pesticides. On the other hand taking on to organic products can be heavy on your pocket as these foods perish faster than the conventionally grown foods . A farmers' market also presents more selection than a superstore. Even though you may find imported fruits in supermarkets in winter, you may not find much fresh fruit in a winter farmers' market. On the other hand while the supermarket may have only one or two kinds of tomatoes for sale, you have a variety of choices in a farmers' market that ranges from red plum tomatoes to heirloom and even purple tomatoes. You may also stumble upon some unique products in farmers' market which is not offered in supermarkets like bok choy or daikon. The more variety your diet is, the more vitamins and minerals you get from your fruits and vegetables.

Economical and healthier market

Farmers' market food products are fairly cheaper than the merchandise found in other markets as there are no middle men in between. Additionally, there is no necessity of spending money on gas to transport the produce to traditional markets. Last, but not least, purchasing goods at a farmers' market is healthier for you not only because of its fresh produce, but because you purchase goods in the outdoors and not in an air-conditioned supermarket. Farmers' markets are open air affairs where you can get pleasure from the fresh air and supply your body its daily dose of Vitamin D. What's more, strolling around these large farmers' market provides you your daily dose of exercise, and even some weight training while carrying your heavy packages!
