Vitamins are of two main types, fat-soluble and water-soluble. Whether the ones that you consume are released into the environment through your urine depends on which is the type of vitamin that you are taking. While you will notice your urine changes colour if you take vitamins and supplements (especially B vitamins), they are not released in toxic quantities.

When fat-soluble vitamins are consumed, they are stored in fat tissues. Vitamins A, D, E and K are absorbed into fat globules. These move around in the lymphatic system of the small intestine and carry the vitamins through the blood to the fat tissues where it the nutrients are stored.

These fat-soluble vitamins remain in the tissues of the body till the time the body requires them. These can be stored in the body tissues for more than a few months and excess consumption can prove to be dangerous for your health. Too much intake of these vitamins can lead to excess amounts present in the fat tissues causing toxicity or a condition called hypervitaminosis.

A lack of fat-soluble vitamins is usually found in people when their fat intake is very low or they have conditions such as cystic fibrosis which interfere with the proper absorption of fat from the intestines.

Water-soluble vitamins act differently in the body and these are the ones that are released through the urine into the environment. These are not stored in the body and include vitamin C and the B vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B7, B9, and B12.

They are quite a few people who are deficient in these water-soluble vitamins because they are not stored in the body if not immediately used. The processing of food such as during canning, freezing and packaging also tends to diminish these vitamins in the food that we consume.

Vegetarians are often deficient in B12, an important B group vitamin required for the production of red blood cells. This is why this group of people may require supplements of this particular B vitamin.

A supplement should be chosen carefully and special attention should be given to the vitamins along with the minerals that it contains. Potassium is a mineral that is often combined in these supplements to provide relief from prolonged stress. Another important mineral that helps in the absorption of vitamin D and minerals such as calcium and zinc is magnesium. Taking a liquid calcium supplement can help with this mineral if your intake of magnesium is naturally low, or you can't get magnesium supplements.
