The waste management process is designed to reach several key goals. One major goal is to conserve sources of water, energy, nutrients, and raw materials. Another major goal is to control the pollution of land, air, water, and sediment. An additional focus is on enhancing business performance, maintaining corporate social responsibility, and improving occupational health and safety.

Societies discard materials from a variety of sources. Commercial, industrial, agricultural, and residential activities produce the majority of wastes in municipalities. Waste management works to process garbage produced by mining, radiation, demolition, biosolids, and water and energy treatment. As the process goes forward, managers strive to consider the value of economic development, and the importance of protecting both human health and the environment.

Most garbage collection vehicles are powered by diesel fuel. Many companies, however, are working to develop trucks powered by natural gas or biodiesel; garbage trucks are actually one of the most commonly produced natural gas vehicles. Environmentally-friendly vehicles produce less nitrous oxide and particulates, which creates improved air quality. These trucks are vital to the transportation of both garbage, destined for the landfill, and other material, destined for recycling region.

Waste management involves the processing of discarded materials. Organic wastes are processed by composting, chemical stabilization, digestion, land application, and pelletization. Products which are set aside to recycle go to recycling plants, while other solid wastes, which are not recycled, go into landfills. Household hazardous wastes are collected and stored at specific facilities. Some other discarded materials, like old tires, are also sent to dedicated facilities.

Garbage provides a critical renewable energy source. Incinerating garbage gets rid of discarded materials, preventing them from going into landfills. Also, incinerating garbage generates steam, that powers electrical generators. In addition, landfills produce methane gas when garbage decomposes, and this gas may power the electrical and heating systems of many homes and businesses. In fact, gases produced in landfills heat about 1.6 million homes each year.

Monitoring of waste production should occur throughout any project. Data must be collected about a wide variety of practices, including the amount of discarded materials generated, the ratio of recycling, and how well discarded materials are diverted from a landfill. Information must be collected throughout the project, interpreted at site meetings, and used to identify needed improvements.

People may try a wide variety of methods, to reduce the amount of garbage they produce. Buying fewer small packages, for instance, and buying bulk instead, will reduce the amount of discarded material. Also, reusing containers, like plastic yogurt tubs, keeps the amount of waste down, and saves money. In addition, taking full advantage of municipal recycling programs will lower the amount of garbage produced.

Reducing the amount of garbage, and repurposing materials that would otherwise be discarded, is a key component of a healthy planet. Many people work in the waste management industry, but even regular people have an important role to play in the process. Every day, the industry is coming up with new and innovative ways to reuse garbage, and to clean up the planet.
