If you are in the market for a flat roof, there is good news. The top technology available is both more affordable and better for the environment than roofing techniques of the past.
The roofing I am referring to is called "Single Ply". These roofs are white but this reflective white turns to "Green" when it comes to our environment and property owner's bank accounts.
Single Ply lasts longer and reduces costs spent on maintenance and cooling. When it comes time to replace your roof, the old roof doesn't even need to be removed because the single ply material is so light weight. This means less garbage and negative impact to the environment.
Traditionally, flat roofs are made from layers of hot tar separated by paper. Each gallon of hot tar spread onto a roof brings with it great billows of smoke and toxic chemicals. It is very harmful to the environment and very unsafe for workers leading to many tar burns.
Hot tar no longer makes sense as a choice for your flat roof. Why use hot tar, when the roofing industry has come up with a superior solution that lasts longer, produces no harmful fumes, is recyclable and has a surface that reflects the sun (saving on energy bills)?
Flat roofing gives you many options to be creative and create even more of a "green" feel. For example, you can plant a garden on your single ply roof with grass, bushes, trees and flowers. This not only looks beautiful, it also helps the environment by retaining water and cleaning the air.
Hot tar has been the standard in flat roofing for decades. There are many companies that still specialize in it and therefore still recommend it. Make sure to shop around and find a company that specializes in single ply. If you compare the two, it will be hard to miss the advantages of single ply. These "greener", longer-lasting roofs are taking over the industry for a reason.
