Tire shredders provide a method of recycling old rubber tires to avoid their stockpiling on lots or being thrown in landfills. These machines cut the tire into little pieces so they can be recycled and used in other products. The need for this has grown enormously as more and more tires are disposed of every day and people have become more aware of the adverse effect this has on the environment.
Many governments, local and otherwise, have forbidden the disposal of tires in stockpiles and landfills. Tires in stockpiles create a perfect environment for rodents and mosquitoes to breed. Those creatures can carry many diseases that can be passed to animals and humans. In landfills, rubber tires can rise to the surface cover and damage it. Tires are also present a risk of fire.
Recycled rubber from tires can be used for fuel in kilns in some types of manufacturing factories. It must be cut into a minimum size of two inches to be used for this purpose. The rubber can also be used for padding in stadiums and in landscaping because it is more flexible than solid ground or stone surfaces. There are many other uses for this recycled material and additional uses are still being discovered.
Machines not designed specifically for shredding tires can be used but tend to pull the rubber and tear it apart exposing the steel. Lots of exposed steel in the pieces will make it unmarketable. For use in most of the products that use recycled rubber, the steel wire must be removed. Some are designed so that they can remove the steel from the tires before being shredded, but most do not have that capability.
There is a type of shredder that can be moved to different locations. These are convenient when a client has a lot of tires that need recycled but cannot haul them to the location. They are small and cannot handle many tires at a time. These machines are powered by either generators or gas engines.
Most shredders are maintained at a location, such as a recycling plant or some other type of facility. These run slow, have a low heavy gear, and have a set of shafts containing knives. These are very efficient machines. They are capable of cutting rubber into two inch pieces. Some of them can process over two thousand tires per hour.
Most of these machines have a built in safety feature to stop to stop it in the even a preset maximum weight load is exceeded. This is to prevent to many tires going through it at one time and damaging the blades, and to stop it automatically in the event an object that is not meant to be shredded falls into it. The machines are also equipped with manual shut down buttons.
Tire shredders cost, for a basic model, about a hundred thousand dollars. The more features available on a machine, the more it will cost. Some cost many hundred thousands of dollars. The most expensive maintenance that must be done on the machine is replacing the knives. The process is costly and time consuming. There are some machines that have blades that can be re-sharpened and, therefore, can save some money over time.
