Why would you want to filter your drinking water? Surely our tap water is clean and good to drink already? Unfortunately it's not, and for this reason many are using water filtration systems like ceramic water filters to purify their water.

Believe it or not the Ralph Nader Institute estimates that there are up to 2100 toxic chemicals in our drinking water. Things like lead, heavy metals, PCBs, herbicides, pesticides and much more.

How does a ceramic drinking water filter work? It works by forcing water through tiny holes so that contaminants with molecule sizes bigger than the molecule size of water are filtered out. The tiny hole is created by using a filtering substance made of what is called Diatomaceous Earth. This is a substance made up of huge numbers of tiny fossilised shells from millions of years ago. It is manufactured into the filter mechanism of what is known as a ceramic filter.

This Diatomaceous Earth filter has extremely tiny holes through which the water passes, thus removing contaminants.

But this doesn't remove all contaminants. One that isn't removed is bacteria, so colloidal silver is also added to the filter to remove the bacteria.

People have been using ceramic water filters for over 100 years.

But is a ceramic water filter the best water filter? Maybe they're over 100 years old, but that doesn't mean they're the best. And after reading about those 2100 toxic chemicals you may be thinking that you need the best water filter that money can buy.

And the best water filtration methods produce water that is cleaner than any naturally occurring water source. And way cleaner than bottled water.

Well there are some problems with ceramic drinking water filters. That's not to say they are useless, just that they aren't the best.

Ceramic filters don't filter out chlorine. Whilst we need chlorine in our water to kill the nasty bugs we certainly don't want to drink it. The best water filters filter out 99.9% of chlorine. Ceramic water filters don't.

The filter material can be prone to forming tiny hairline cracks. You can't see these, but these compromise the water quality. You won't know if this happens but you are then drinking contaminated water again.

And the FTC don't consider that using colloidal silver is a sufficiently good method of killing bacteria.

So whilst good ceramic filters aren't the best water filters. They have their problems, and over time the filters can block up as well unless you clean them regularly.

And modern technology is now producing some highly effective water filtering systems that remove just about anything you need removed from your water so it's extremely clean to drink.

However using a ceramic filter is way better than using no water filtering device at all.
