Sheltering in place is something everyone should be prepared for. This means you should prepare your home in the event of a nearby disaster. For one reason or another, many people are forced to leave their homes in bad times. But with the proper preparations, you and your family can stay safely at home.
There are many catastrophes you could face in your lifetime. You could be affected by tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes. You could suffer because of an act of terrorism, an anthrax scare or chemical attacks. While we shouldn't live in fear, these are very real and possible dangers that we should be prepared for.
Turning your home into a shelter is an ideal way to protect your family. When some people think of sheltering in place they think of bomb shelters under their house. There are easier, and cheaper, ways to stay safe in your home, though.
Many companies provide step by step plans for how to prepare your home to be a shelter. Find a plan you like and implement it. Inform your family of what you're doing and keep the plan in a safe place so you can review it often. Once you follow the steps you'll have peace of mind.
Most plans require that you have certain supplies on hand. A wind-up radio, flashlights and extra batteries are always encouraged. Storable foods (as much as a year's supply) are also a wise investment. And, of course, you need lots of water. You can either store clean water in bottles or use a quality water filter that will eliminate toxins from any water source. Your plan will tell you what else you should have on hand.
The government often provides help during times of disaster, but you shouldn't just expect to trust them. Take the necessary precautions for sheltering in place and you won't have to rely on the government. There's a great chance you'll never personally experience a disastrous event, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
