It is important to know the value of Storm water management systems and to ensure that they are working in optimum condition in your house and in your neighborhood. If these systems are non-existence on your property or in your neighborhood, it could lead to flooding, and your property or neighborhood may be vulnerable in the event of a flood.

Storm water can simple be explained as the excess water from rainfall or melting of snow that are not absorbed into the ground. Such a torrent is usually channeled into the closest rivers, stream or ocean by natural drainage systems. The flow from the natural drainage is sometimes channeled through the man-made systems to it safer for the environment.

The major functions of the man-made drainage systems include but are not limited to retention, detention and reuse. The detention ensures that the flow is detained in a basin so that it does not get to the low lying areas that could get flooded easily. Retention of the flow is also similar to detention; however, the flow is retained so until it can be channeled through another course or till it could be used for another purpose.

The retention keeps the water in large underground reservoirs where it is treated until the need for it arises in an industrial capacity or until it can be recycled. There are some other times when the supply is released into the streams, rivers and the ocean. When the water is treated before being allowed to go into the ocean, it would be free of harmful substances, thus, it is better for the environment.

When a flood happens the consequences are usually dire. It could lead to the destruction of properties and many lives could be lost in the process. Thus, if you do not want to experience a storm then you have to do all that you can to ensure you play your part. A good way of playing your part is by being responsible for the run off from your property. You can start by making sure that your land absorbed much water so that the volume that runs off into the drain is reduced.

If you allow rainfall to form a pool on your property, you could end up breeding harmful microbes that you be harmful for your health. More so, the excess flow could spill over into the streets and it would increase the volume that the already overused drainage systems will have to handle.

You should also avoid paving a large or unnecessary portion of your yard, because when you pave lands it is not possible for water to seep into the soil in such places and you invariably increase the run off into the drainage. Rather than paving the land, you could plant more grass so that it would slowdown the rate of flow thereby by ensuring that more of the water is absorbed.

Another thing that you need to know is that you actions could have both long and short term effects on the efficiency of your drainage systems. You should know that if the drains are blocked then it could lead to a flood. Thus, you need to ensure that you do all within your power to ensure that your activities do not block the drain and encourage others to do the same. More so, ensuring that your storm water management is in its optimal condition will keep the threat of a flood away.
